Erasmus of Rotterdam discovered something disturbing: the most explicit verse about the Trinity in the Bible did not exist in the original Greek manuscripts.
In 1516, he published the first printed Greek New Testament  and omitted 1 John 5:7. The Church demanded explanations. Scholars accused him of heresy. And then a “convenient” manuscript appeared…

This is the story of the Comma Johanneum & how seventeen words were added to the Bible, why Erasmus was forced to include them, and what Isaac Newton discovered about this passage (but never dared to publish during his lifetime)

and then over many years and biased copying, compromised the original ... the sleuthery involved was spearheaded by Erasmus but by that time falsifyers were willing to make it seem it had been in the greek all along thru forgery. Erasmus footnoting this did not stem the tide ... he ended his life in Freiburg, having moved there, tired of the turmoil of theologians, the bioleninists of their day i am sure.
